There are seasons where everything feels like too much. Where you are moving through the days but you are not really in them. You feel scattered, flat, a little numb. Like you have left yourself somewhere along the way and you are not quite sure how to get back.

I know that feeling well. And I know what we tend to reach for when we are in it.

We numb. We avoid. We scroll until we look but do not see, we eat when we are not hungry, we pour the wine, we chase little hits of connection that do not actually nourish us. We reach for things. Anything. Things outside of ourselves, because turning inward feels like the hardest thing in the world right when we need it most.

But the way back is not out there. It never has been.

Reconnecting to yourself is not complicated. It is actually really simple. It is just not always easy in practice, and there is a difference. Here are five things I come back to, again and again, when life feels heavy and I have lost my way home to myself.

1. Move your body

Move. Your. Body.

Yoga, weights, dance, a walk, a run, it honestly does not matter what it is. Just something. Motion moves emotion. So much of what we carry gets stuck in the body, and movement is how we let it move through us instead of sitting there.

But here is the part that took me a while to understand: it is not really about the workout. When you tell yourself you are going to move, and then you actually do it, you have honoured yourself. And every time you honour your body, you build a little more trust in yourself. You start to believe your own word. That trust is everything.

Be gentle with how you fuel it, too. Move your body, and nourish it. Both are ways of saying I am worth taking care of.

2. Get still and do nothing

This one feels almost rebellious, does it not?

I want you to do nothing. No scrolling, no binge watching, no filling every quiet moment with noise. Just time and space to be. Sit with yourself. Meditate if that is your thing, or simply sit and breathe and let the stillness be uncomfortable for a minute. It will be, at first.

We are human beings. Not human doings. Somewhere along the way we forgot that, and we started measuring our worth by how much we produce and how busy we look. But you do not have to earn your rest, and you do not have to fill every gap. Stillness is where you actually hear yourself again.

3. Ground yourself in nature

Get outside and put your bare feet on the earth for at least five minutes, every single day if you can.

There is something that happens when you are physically connected to the ground beneath you. It pulls you out of your head and back into your body, back into the present. If five quiet minutes feels like a stretch, take your morning coffee out there with you. Sit on the grass, feel the sun, let yourself slow down before the day swallows you up.

It is such a small thing. But the small things are usually the ones that hold us together.

4. Journal it out

Nothing quite beats pen to paper, in my opinion. There is a magic in it. The way your thoughts untangle themselves the moment they leave your head and land on the page.

If pen and paper is not for you, do it digitally. Record a voice note if that is easier. The how does not matter. What matters is that you give yourself somewhere to brain dump, to process, to get clear. So much of feeling heavy is just feeling full. Full of unspoken thoughts and unfelt feelings with nowhere to go. Journalling gives them a place to land so you can finally see what is actually going on underneath.

5. Do something that brings you joy

And then, please, do something just because it lights you up.

Dance in your kitchen. Get your hands in the garden. Sing badly and loudly. Make something, paint something, create something with no purpose other than the pure pleasure of it. As a Generator, this is how I come back to life, by following what genuinely sparks me and noticing what makes me feel alive again.

Joy is not a reward you get once everything else is sorted. It is not the last thing on the list. It is medicine. It is one of the fastest ways back to yourself, because it reminds you who you are underneath all the heaviness.

The thing underneath all of this

Here is what I really want you to hear.

Reconnecting to yourself can feel unimportant. It can feel selfish, even. Like there are a hundred other things that should come first, a hundred other people who need you more. But the disconnection lives right there, in that exact belief. In the choice to put yourself last, again and again, until there is nothing left of you to give.

Because it is not easy to show up as the best version of yourself when you are running on empty. It is not easy to hold your family and your friends and everyone who leans on you when you yourself are not grounded. You cannot pour from a cup you keep forgetting to fill.

So this is your reminder, and mine too. Honour your word to yourself. Keep the promises you make to you, the same way you would keep them for someone you love. That is how you gather the evidence, slowly and quietly, that you really can trust yourself.

Start with one of these. Just one. The way back to yourself is never as far as it feels.

If you have been doing all the things and life still feels heavy. If there is a quiet sense that you have lost touch with who you are underneath everything you have become, that is the work I do with my clients. Not to fix you, but to help you come home to yourself and trust yourself again. Book a discovery call →
